The second half of the book continues with more injustices faced by James and his family. In chapter ten, James’ brother Richie is arrested for a drug crime, that he did not commit and was haggled by the policemen because he had $90 of college money in his pocket, another example of the rampant racial profiling of the time period. Ruth’s father’s narrow-mindedness is shown again as she recalls her high school graduation that he forbid her to attended because part of the ceremony was to take place in a Gentile church. Ruth originally defied her father, but could not go through with it when she approached the threshold of the church. In the books final chapters, James talks about how he began looking into his mothers past; he went to Suffolk with the address of his mother’s old house and the name of her childhood friend. In Suffolk he spoke with this childhood friend and even entered the synagogue that his mother’s family attended. This shows me, that as he grew older James began to finally discover the heritage of his mother that when he had questioned her as a child about she ignored, shrugging it off as irrelevant. In between James’ chapters about his visit to Suffolk, Ruth discusses the harassment that she and James’ father were subject to as an interracial couple in 1940s Harlem. It was during this time that Ruth converted to Christianity and eventually established a church with her late husband. The Epilogue seems symbolic to me, since it involves James’ coworker who is the son of a Holocaust survivor, the Holocaust being a cataclysmic injustice, invites James and Ruth to a Jewish wedding. Ruth agrees to attend and enters a synagogue for the first time since being a child. It is here where it seems Ruth has embraced her own heritage, a heritage that her son had embraced soon before. It seems that by the end of the memoir everything has come full circle. Both Ruth and James, while still haunted with the injustices faced, have come to grips with their heritage, which has made them who they are. While, I personally can’t imagine the hardships that a multi-racial person faced not long ago in our country’s history, I can admire and appreciate the immense difficulty and struggle that a person has between two different groups of people that they love. While things in terms of racial and religious discrimination are less out in the open as they were just decades ago and progress has been made, people still face the injustices of being treated differently simply because they don’t look like the predominant group in a society. James McBride’s memoir shows that regardless of race or religion we are all people and we all have the same feelings and desires in life and that while being of multi-racial background may have been seen as a detriment to him in the past, it appears to me that it has enriched his life and made him a very strong willed individual. The Color of Water is about much more than one issue; rather it is a glimpse at the life of a son and his mother, the discrimination that they both faced from family and strangers alike, and a multi-racial man learning to come to grips with his identity as person of two ethnic backgrounds, which African Americans and Jews seem extremely different, they ironically both faced the same type of discrimination. The mission of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, is to improve the lives of our members and their families, to give voice to their legitimate professional, economic and social aspirations, to strengthen the institutions in which we work, to improve the quality of the services we provide, to bring together all members to assist and support one another and to promote democracy, human rights and freedom in our union, in our nation and throughout the world. † (tx. aft. rg) Part of this year’s legislative strategy for the Texas AFT was a letter to President Linda Bridges, a moment of opportunity to reform testing and reinvest in public education and they are ready with specific proposals, reinvesting in public education, improved working conditions, `improved learning conditions, and a call to action. The Texas AFT wants to influence the legislator because the school districts hav e been left to try to make up for inadequate state aid by raising local tax rates, even as the state has continued to make it much harder for them to accomplish this. Basically, all they want to do is handle the budget crisis in the school districts of Texas. To analyze the successes and failures of Texas AFT in influencing legislation is short and sweet; school systems are still under budgeted and local taxes are still being raised to help the schools. The only break educators have received was in 2006 with â€Å"surplus† dollars tax swap for which the bill is now belatedly coming due. The third interest group of topic is a single interest group called Mothers Against Drunk Driving, also known as MADD. A single interest group is a group of persons working on behalf of or strongly supporting a particular cause, such as an item of legislation, an industry, or a special segment of society. (Answer. com) Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a non-profit organization seeking to stop drunk driving, support victims of drunk driving, prevent underage drinking, and push for stricter alcohol policy overall. MADD was incorporated on September 5, 1980, the purposes of MADD as stated in its Articles of Incorporation were â€Å"To aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to aid the families of such victims and to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving. (madd. org) The strategy employed by MADD to influence legislation is crystal clear; they want to stop drunk driving, especially by underage drivers, and they will use any legal means necessary to accomplish their agenda. They make this statement repeatedly, in various forms, on different areas of their website, in their mission statement and in educational pamphlets. Throughout the years they have been fighting against drunk driving, some laws MADD has inspired and/or influenced are mandatory BAC testing for drivers who survive, . 08 Per Se, mandatory alcohol education and Child Endangerment. These are just a few and every year they fight for more, and usually stricter laws, like mandatory BAC testing for drivers who are killed, sobriety checkpoints and mandatory alcohol assessment/treatment. These groups vary considerably in size, influence and motive; some have wide ranging long term social purposes, others are focused and are a response to an immediate issue or concern. Texas Public Interest Research Group (TexPIRG) takes on powerful interests on behalf of Texass citizens, working to win concrete results for our health and our well-being. Some strategies employed to influence legislation are the safe food, healthy kids’ petition, toxic-free communities, transportation issues for Texas, financial security, healthcare, higher education, taxes and budgets, mediaInternet reform freedom, and Elections and Government Reforms. The success is the U. S. Department of Agriculture announced tougher safety standards for ground beef served in school. The new standards will end a practice of selling beef products to the school lunch program that would be rejected by fast food chains. A failure of the TexPIRG is the smoke-free Texas petition, an attempt to ban smoking in any public place. This petition did not successfully pass through legislation. This essay discussed the comparisons and contrasts of how every individual interest group effects or has tried to effect legislation. Some pass and others fail, but all interest groups can influence our government. We learned about a business interest group called Texas Alliance of Energy Producers, a professional interest group identified as Texas AFT, a single interest group acknowledged as MADD, and a public Interest group known as TexPIRG. In the last 18 years, the country’s leadership has been engaged in a protracted effort to transform it into a globally recognized and respected modern state (Brannagan and Grix par. 3). Being the world’s richest country in terms of per capita income, which stood at USD$ 448,246 in 2008, Qatar has managed to achieve tremendous successes in its short history (Hey 42). The first and most relevant research article is titled, ‘The rise of Qatar as a Soft Power and the Challenges’ by Osman Antwi-Boateng. The research is important and relevant to my thesis since it comprehensively covers the various ways through which Qatar exercises its soft power. According to the article, Qatar exercises soft power influence through what it refers to as attraction and ‘carrots’. In terms of attraction, the article points to the strong political stability, close relationship with the US, progressive higher education system, and effective income redistribution policies (Antwi-Boateng 42). The country also uses carrots through the media (Aljazeera Network), sports investments, and foreign aid policy to advance its soft power across the world. In this study, the author explores how Qatar exerts its soft power in its foreign pol icy in addition to how it addresses various challenges in advancing its influence. Antwi-Boateng begins by noting that the country is an exception of its neighbors who are facing political instability or other major hurdles affecting their influence in Middle East and in extension, the world (47). Firstly, in his study, Antwi-Boateng notes the importance of sport as a major source of soft power for Qatar (51). Antwi-Boateng regards Qatar’s sponsorship of Barcelona, a world’s re-known Spanish club as well as its purchase of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), a French club, as major steps that the nation has taken to improve its influence through the world’s most popular game (48). According to the study, Qatar is ranked at the 20th place worldwide in terms of the percentage of its population’s giving and first position in the Middle East and Arab Countries (Antwi-Boateng 45). According to the study, foreign aid is linked with positive goodwill, which enhances the country’s reputation among its beneficiaries. This move is in line with Nye’s claim that such efforts lead to legitimate power in the eyes of others (‘Public Diplomacy’ 99). For instance, in 2010-2011, the nation’s development and humanitarian aid amounted to more than USD$ 1 billion (Brannagan and Grix par. 2). Its foreign aid policy has been majorly focused on Arab countries that have been experiencing political instability due to the Arab Spring (Kinninmont 5). For instance, Qatar has advanced a low interest loan of USD$1 billion to Tunisia. Other studies that have also addressed Qatar’s soft power are also relevant to this research. One these researches is titled, ‘Qatar: A First-Hand Account of Soft Power’, by Brannagan, Mubanga, and Wolff. In the study, Brannagan, Mubanga, and Wolff point out the increasing influence in the regional and global political affairs (par. 4). The study identifies the increased efforts of Qatar to become a top tourist destination. Further, there have been more efforts to market the country through its unique culture to the world. The research is also relevant to this study since it covers cultural and tourism aspects through which Qatar seeks to gain influence in regional and global political affairs. Another important study that is relevant to my thesis is, ‘Qatar’s Soft Power Gamble: The FIFA World Cup 2022’ by Paul Brannagan and Jonathan Grix. In the study, the focus is on the growing participation and presence of Qatar in the international sports, and more importantly, its successful bid for hosting 2022 world cup games (QTA par. 2). Hosting such an event will be in line with the nation’s plans of becoming a top tourist destination since it will present a prime opportunity of displaying the country’s culture and attractiveness to billions of spectators across the world (FIFA par. 6). The study will be important for my thesis since it will provide important information and support on the increasing use of sporting and tourism as a means of gaining soft power for the Middle East country. Data In my thesis, I will use both primary and secondary data to address the main research question. There is a considerable amount of data that can be drawn from different secondary sources. For instance, Qatar’s Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics offers a rich source of data and important figures that can support different assertions of my research paper such as foreign aid and investment in sports and tourism. Further, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website also offers significant information on Qatar’s foreign policy and foreign aid, which are both central to my research (par. 3). Owing to the high number of other studies that the research relies on, this study will offer an important platform of accessing and drawing secondary information. Primary data sources will include the use of interviews, surveys, and questions that will be targeted to specific population groups privy to Qatar’s soft power. For instance, interviews will be conducted on people such as lecturers and professors who can offer expert opinion on Qatar’s growing political influence in the Middle East and the world at large. Online survey will also be important in providing important information on the opinions of different populations on Qatar’s growing influence. The primary data is important in incorporating the information that will be obtained through secondary data sources. Outline of the Argument In the last two decades, Qatar has emerged from a little known and less influential nation to a major player in regional and global political affairs. During this time, with a major economic transformation, the country has used different approaches to acquire legitimate power and influ ence over other nations. Of these approaches, military muscle power and economic maneuvers, which have traditionally been the source power for many countries, have not been used by the country. Instead, the country has used other approaches to gain soft power. So far, it has been successful. My thesis will seek to discuss the various approaches of soft power that Qatar has used to gain its political influence in the Middle East and around the globe. These approaches include the use of culture, tourism, foreign aid, and sports. The thesis will discuss each of the above approaches in an attempt to show how they have helped Qatar to gain its influence and prominence in the global political affairs. Frameworks The first framework will be a theoretical structure that will focus on the concept of soft power. Drawing heavily from Joseph Nye’s ‘Public Diplomacy and Soft Power’, the framework will guide the thesis in providing an understanding of what constitutes soft pow er and how Qatar has been successful in gaining political influence through its well-calculated use of various processes of gaining power. Nye’s article comprehensively covers and brings forth the concept of soft power by comparing its effectiveness with the use of hard power (Nye ‘Public Diplomacy’ 102). It is evident that although hard power still dominates what constitutes power in the global political influence, soft power approaches have emerged strongly as an option for many countries that cannot exercise hard power. By utilizing the ideas brought forward in Nye’s article, my thesis will be able to cover the use of soft power by Qatar as it continues to emerge as a major power in the Middle East and in the global political environment. My research will also adopt the conceptual framework, which will focus on how the ideas of my thesis will be organized and presented to answer the main research question. It will also focus on how Qatar frames its appr oaches in order to gain power over other nations across the world. The framework is important since it helps to link the theoretical framework to real life examples of how soft power can be utilized successfully. By covering each of the areas and approaches through which Qatar has exerted its influence globally, the plan will be an important part of the conceptual framework of helping to answer various questions that arise from the process of answering the main research question. Chapter/Section Outline The thesis will begin with a background discussion on Qatar’s past and current status. It will show how it has gained an influential status over the years in the Middle East and beyond. This information will form an important part of the thesis. It will provide the foundation and basis for my research. The background information will include Qatar’s growing economic significance in the Middle East in terms of how it has been able to extend its influence beyond the regio n. The second section of thesis will focus on various ways through which Qatar gains its power and influence in its region and across the world. In this section, the first component to be covered will focus on how Qatar uses foreign aid to attain power and/or exert its influence across the world. The second component will focus on Qatar’s use of cultural institutions, including education and arts to grow its profile as a top education and cultural destination in the world, an achievement that has made it gain considerable power over other nations. The third component of coverage will be tourism and how Qatar, through the Qatar Tourism Authority, has put in place efforts to turn Qatar into a top tourist destination in the Middle East. The last component is the use sport diplomacy that Qatar has adopted to market itself to the world. These strategies include its successful bid to host 2022 World Cup games, its sponsorship of major European clubs such as Barcelona, and its acqui sition of Paris Saint-Germain among many other sporting activities that it has shown interest. Inventors of the Modern Computer In November of 1971, a company called Intel publicly introduced the worlds first single-chip microprocessor, the Intel 4004 (U.S. Patent #3,821,715), invented by Intel engineers Federico Faggin, Ted Hoff, and Stanley Mazor. After the invention of integrated circuits  revolutionized computer design, the only place to go was down in size that is. The Intel 4004 chip took the integrated circuit down one step further by placing all the parts that made a computer think (i.e. central processing unit, memory, input and output controls) on one small chip. Programming intelligence into inanimate objects had now become possible. The History of Intel In 1968, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore were two unhappy engineers working for the Fairchild Semiconductor Company who decided to quit and create their own company at a time when many Fairchild employees were leaving to create start-ups. People like Noyce and Moore were nicknamed the Fairchildren. Robert Noyce typed himself a one-page idea of what he wanted to do with his new company, and that was enough to convince San Francisco venture capitalist Art Rock to back Noyces and Moores new venture. Rock raised $2.5 million dollars in less than 2 days. Intel Trademark The name Moore Noyce was already trademarked by a hotel chain, so the two founders decided upon the name Intel for their new company, a shortened version of Integrated Electronics. Intels first money-making product was the 3101 Schottky bipolar 64-bit static random access memory (SRAM) chip. One Chip Does the Work of Twelve In late 1969, a potential client from Japan called Busicom, asked to have twelve custom chips designed. Separate chips for keyboard scanning, display control, printer control and other functions for a Busicom-manufactured calculator. Intel did not have the manpower for the job but they did have the brainpower to come up with a solution. Intel engineer, Ted Hoff decided that Intel could build one chip to do the work of twelve. Intel and Busicom agreed and funded the new programmable, general-purpose logic chip. Federico Faggin headed the design team along with Ted Hoff and Stanley Mazor, who wrote the software for the new chip. Nine months later, a revolution was born. At 1/8th inch wide by 1/6th inch long and consisting of 2,300 MOS (metal oxide semiconductor) transistors, the baby chip had as much power as the ENIAC, which had filled 3,000 cubic feet with 18,000 vacuum tubes. Cleverly, Intel decided to buy back the design and marketing rights to the 4004 from Busicom for $60,000. The next year Busicom went bankrupt, they never produced a product using the 4004. Intel followed a clever marketing plan to encourage the development of applications for the 4004 chip, leading to its widespread use within months. The Intel 4004 Microprocessor The 4004 was the worlds first universal microprocessor. In the late 1960s, many scientists had discussed the possibility of a computer on a chip, but nearly everyone felt that integrated circuit technology was not yet ready to support such a chip. Intels Ted Hoff felt differently; he was the first person to recognize that the new silicon-gated MOS technology might make a single-chip CPU (central processing unit) possible. Hoff and the Intel team developed such an architecture with just over 2,300 transistors in an area of only 3 by 4 millimeters. With its 4-bit CPU, command register, decoder, decoding control, control monitoring of machine commands and interim register, the 4004 was one heck of a little invention. Todays 64-bit microprocessors are still based on similar designs, and the microprocessor is still the most complex mass-produced product ever with more than 5.5 million transistors performing hundreds of millions of calculations each second - numbers that are sure to be outdated fast.

Bullying will become an increasingly important problem for parents, school, administrators, and teachers, and will affect our society at large if not prevented. People started to realize action needed to be taken. Some suggested a behavioral approach. Tamanini (2017) on the other hand, feels that the best way to prevent bullying is starting at home. There was also Cordi and Masturzo (2013) who suggested getting students to talk about bullying using fiction and non-fiction books that focus on that subject. They claim that it puts them in a safe place. Throughout time, people have created different interventions and programs and even disciplinary actions to slow down the excessive growth of bullying. Some have been successful and some not so much. Background Bullying is the act of intentionally harming someone physically, verbally, or psychologically. Bullying is often repeated over time and involves an imbalance of power. Acts of bullying include unwelcome touching, teasing and name-calling, sending threatening or mean-spirited messages (such as texts, chats, voicemails, or e-mails) or spreading of hurtful rumors. Bullying and cyberbullying, or bullying that occurs online, are sensitive issues for many children, educators, and families. Some children may be embarrassed that they have been bullied or have bullied others, so it’s important to create a safe environment, where they feel they can share their thoughts. My Position The position I have chosen to pursue is the fact that bullying starts at home. Parents must realize the effect they have on their children and the examples that they are setting. If they see you act on violence, they will do as they see and bring it to their own environment. This is a problem a lot of parents face and don’t realize that to prevent this issue it starts with them. They should even monitor their television and what they allow their kids to watch, especially at a young age. A simple show that your child watches can change their behavior instantly because what they watch they might consider it to be ok. With them being so young and not knowing any better is the best time for them to be influenced. Parents need to step up and be more involved with their children because neglect is a big issue. Parents will focus on what they have going on like work or everything else except their own kids. And that will cause them to act out. Basically, the influence of bullying sta rts at home all around. Forecast Main Points In this essay, I will discuss the cause and effect of bullying. It will touch bases on bullying starting at home and how to prevent it. It will also cover the different types of bullying and how books can help children overcome. Lastly, it will talk about how television has an impact on kid’s behavior towards bullying. Evidence It seems that kids that choose to bully others usually come from the influence of their parents. They come from a home where they see their parents fight a lot and or physical punishment is used (Tamanini, et al., 2017). She suggests that parents start taking disciplinary action on their child early. Students tend to also act out due to lack of attention from their parents, so they lash out to seek attention from others. This can include neglected children, children of divorced parents, children who come from homes where their parents abuse the use of drugs/alcohol. Tamanini (2017) stated, â€Å"Early intervention and effective discipline and boundaries truly are the best way to stop bullying, but parents of the victims or therapists cannot change the bully’s home environment† (2017). Espelage, Ryzin and Polanin (2015), studies the distal outcomes including bullying, cyberbullying, homophobic name-calling, and sexual harassment perpetration (2015). Cyberbullying is enga ging in rumor spreading through cell phone and or the internet. Homophobic name-calling is gender-based name-calling such as â€Å"gay’ or â€Å"dike†. And sexual harassment is unwanted sexual commentary or sexual rumor spreading. They used social-emotional programs to address the troubled behaviors and promote academic success. This program is meant to help young kids and teenagers become more self-aware, manage their emotions and build friendship skills. Cordi and Masturzo (2013) believe that students should use fiction and non-fiction books to talk about bullying. It helps students to feel as if they are not alone and put students in safe place. Just by reading fictional books helps them pay attention and question the choices of others. Whether a student chooses a book that is a classic or just a picture book, they can use books as aides in telling their own stories in a digital and audio form (Cordi & Masturzo, 2013). Students became very active using this method that was presented to them and they felt more comfortable.  Television shows surprisingly have a major negative effect when it comes to bullying. Take for example the show â€Å"Survivor†, which has the concept of a last-man-standing elimination game. It encourages people to form alliances to manipulate the other players just to gain their trust. Meanwhile plotting schemes of their own to go against their own alliances. According to Seale (2004), she states, †Å"These shows send the subtle but clear message to our kids that deceit, gossip, and verbal/physical aggression are perfectly acceptable ways to manipulate your social world towards your own personal gain.† (Seale, 2004). In our society, we seem to feed into the gossip, the humiliation or even the conflict. Opposing Argument Although television shows do play a role in children growing to be bullied, I do not agree that that is the only thing they do. Some shows do give out good messages. For example, the show â€Å"13 Reasons Why† talks about a young lady who had been dealing with bullying through-out her high school experience. At the end of the show, she commits suicide. But before she does, she creates 13 tapes where each person has their own tape and she explains how they played a role in why she took her life. The whole lesson of this show was to let young people know that even if you don’t think you are, you can push someone over the edge. Not everyone is as strong as you think. Some show project ways that kids themselves can intervene or even show parents how they can be more involved. Not all television shows are bad influences but still should be monitored.    Conclusion. Bullying seems to be inevitable. But it is not something that cannot be stopped or slowed down. Children and teens seem to get their bullying habits from many different sources. But one that I most agree with is that it starts at home. Parents need to pay more attention to their kids. Monitor what they watch so that media will not be an issue. Although I do know that you cannot keep everything on T.V from them, you can still educate them that what is shown on television is not always meant to be brought into real life. That the things they display aren’t always right. Parents need to also stop neglecting their children so that they will not go and seek attention in an appropriate way. Pay attention to how you act and what you say around them. Because what they learn from you they will unto others. Kids should feel comfortable in their own environment. Non-the less in their own skin. Students tend to see bullying as power.
